Penang Plans To Set Up Centralised Chicken Halal Slaughter And Processing Centre

GEORGE TOWN, July 11 (Bernama)-- A centralised halal chicken slaughterhouse and processing facility will be set up in Penang to improve hygiene and quality of processed poultry.

Penang Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said several locations had been identified for the halal slaughter and poultry processing centre.

"At the executive council meeting last Wednesday, the state government agreed to provide a site for this and that the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) and Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) would be responsible for the implementation of the centre," he told reporters after a meeting with suppliers of chicken and restaurant owners here Friday.

In another development, Abdul Malik said state government in its exco meeting also agreed to allow restaurants and food premises in the state to operate before 3pm during the month of Ramadan.

"It does not mean, we do not respect Ramadan month, but it does not violate the legal aspects of religion, if the food is sold to non-Muslims and certain groups who are exempted from fasting," he said.

He however said enforcement would be stepped up against Muslims who eat in public places, which violates Section 15 of Penang Syariah Criminal Enactment 1996.
