Senior Citizen Jailed And Fined For Causing Four Deaths On MRR2

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- A senior citizen has to celebrate Aidilfitri behind bars when he was sentenced to four years in jail and fined RM10,000 for reckless driving which caused the deaths of four people in an accident on the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2).

Ampang Magistrate Noor Farah Hazwani Osman sentenced Masrufi Sain, 67, after he changed his plea to guilty Friday and ordered the sentence to commence from the date he was caught on May 20, 2013.

The court also ordered Masrufi to be jailed another six months if he failed to pay the fine, besides getting his driving licence suspended for three years from today.

Masrufi, a construction worker, was charged with reckless driving and causing the deaths of a couple, Hasbullah Abdul Ghani, 25, and Nurul Intan Syahida Nordin, 21, Hasbullah's cousin Tengku Ahmad Faiz Tengku Mohmad, 27, and Asma Ismail, 22, at MRR2, at 5.40 pm on May 19, 2013.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (1999 Amendment) which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine a maximum of RM20,000 and the driving licence suspended.

According to the facts of the case, on the day of the incident, a car driven by the accused was coming down the hill at Jalan Bukit Antarabangsa to enter MRR2 when its brakes failed causing the car to crash into the highway divider and went into the path of oncoming traffic to collide with the victim's car.

Prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, S. Purnima while the accused was unrepresented.
