Traditional Farewell Ceremony For Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin
KUCHING, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- The farewell ceremony for Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng, 92, who ended his tenure today as the sixth Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri, was held steeped in tradition, here.
The ceremony took place at the grounds of Astana Negeri, the offical residence, on the north bank of the Sarawak River.
Earlier, Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and his wife Toh Puan Norkiah, witnessed the swearing-in of Tan Sri Adenan Satem as Sarawak's fifth Chief Minister.
Abang Muhammad Salahuddin was given the salute and he inspected the guard-of-honour comprising 105 officers and members of the 11th battalion of the General Operations Force from the Batu Kawa Camp. It was led by DSP Marebon Manju.
The band from the Sarawak police contingent headquarters played during the inspection of the guard-of-honour.
After the reciting of the doa, Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and his wife, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, state cabinet ministers, federal ministers and other dignitaries, shook hands with about 130 staff of the astana.
There was an air of sadness as they shook hands, with some of the Astana Negeri staff seen shedding tears.
Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and wife were then taken on a ride in the official car from Astana Negeri to their personal residence, Sri Impian in Kampung Temenggong, Jalan Matang, about 30 km away.
A Melanau, Abang Muhammad Salahuddin was born on Aug 27, 1921 in Kampung Nangka, Sibu, Sarawak, to a couple, well-known community leader Abang Barieng Abang Anyut and wife, Dayang Tamiyang Abang Masor.
He had his early formal education at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School from the age of 10 until he completed Standard 7.
He married Toh Puan Dayang Umi Khalsom and they were blessed with nine children.
In 1996, he married for the second time, to Toh Puan Norkiah, and they have four adopted children.
Abang Muhammad Salahuddin started his career in public service in 1940 as a probationary health officer in Sibu and Matu.
He had also served as a probationary municipal inspector after the Second World War until 1947 under the new British colonial administration.
He joined the National Registration Department as a clerk in 1949 and then served with the Public Works Department (1952-1963) before leaving the public service to be involved in politics.
Abang Muhammad Salahuddin was appointed as Sarawak's third Yang Dipertua Negeri on April 2, 1977 and served for five years.
He was Acting Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri for Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Mohamed Noor during the latter's absence for a holiday in June 1990 and again in September 1999 when the latter was receiving medical treatment in Kuala Lumpur and upon Ahmad Zaidi's death on Dec 4, 2000.
On Feb 21, 2001, Abang Muhammad Salahuddin was re-appointed as Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri.
