Shell Delivers FAD Project For Sabah Fishermen
The country's first private-public project for fishermen, it is funded by Shell Malaysia and delivered jointly with the Sabah government through the Sabah Fisheries Department.
Shell Malaysia general manager for Sabah, Siti Sulaiman said Shell proposed the FAD project to promote and create new fishing grounds away from the restricted area of its deepwater platforms.
"Our priority is and always will be safety. As a responsible operator, we do not want our activities to interrupt the livelihood of the communities we operate in, whether onshore or offshore," she said in a statement, here.
Siti and Sabah Fisheries Department director Datuk Rayner Stuel Galid marked the official deployment of the FADs, which was also attended by members of the Kota Kinabalu Tuna Fishing Fishermen's Group.
Meanwhile, Rayner said the partnership programme would sustain the livelihood of the fishermen involved, who were from the lower-income bracket.
He said the department would further develop tuna fishing by helping the fishing community with new and efficient fishing technologies, including sonar fishing.
The project involves creating new fishing grounds by placing FADs at a safe distance away from the restricted Gumusut-Kakap deepwater project area.
Ten FADs were safely installed in the pre-identified area, located about 85 nautical miles, off Kota Kinabalu.
