Proton To Launch New Model By Year-end

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Proton Holdings Bhd is set to introduce a totally new model by year-end, said chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said the customers expected Proton to improve in terms of quality and it cost a lot of money as everything needed to be checked to make sure it used the best materials.

"The price of the new model will be cheaper compared to any other models in same segment, as what Proton cars should be.

"However, it has to go up a little as customers are paying for something better," he said.

Dr Mahathir said this to reporters after the launch of 'Drive for Gaza', a fund-raising initiative of Proton in collaboration with Perdana Global Peace Foundation in aid of war victims in Palestine.

He said for the new model, Proton was totally using its internal fund, especially for research and development (R&D).

Dr Mahathir said Proton has been using its own money for a long time for R&D and the government should reimburse it.

"In South Korea and Japan the governments support the private sector and as a result they gained from the taxes collected.

Meanwhile, Proton's chief executive officer, Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah, said the carmaker would continue to introduce new models, hopefully one a year, to ensure its continued survival.
