Sarawak's Jan-May Export Value Registers RM50.477 Million

KUCHING, July 12 (Bernama) -- The value of Sarawak's exports registered RM50.477 million between January to May this year, while imports for the same period was at RM17.345 million.

Sarawak Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade)director Leany Mokhtar said the principal export markets for the state was Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China and also Asean, which also accounted for 70 per cent of trade.

"Sarawak's main exports were natural gas, petroleum, palm oil, black pepper, timber as well as wood-based products," she added.

She said this at Matrade's Media Engagement and Networking Session here last night.

Elaborating further, Leany said the export value registered clearly showed that the overseas market was important to the country.

"Entrepreneurs and Sarawak's exporters in particular, are urged to enhance their export capabilities so that Malaysia can emerge as a stellar trading nation.

"We hope that programmes organised by Matrade can assist entrepreneurs and Sarawak's exporters increase their knowledge as well as receive information to prepare them to explore the more competitive markets," she added.

Leany said this year, Matrade has planned 148 trade promotion programmes both overseas and at home and it was hoped that more companies from Sarawak will become actively involved in all of it.

"Sarawak's entrepreneurs need to grab the opportunities offered by Matrade towards expanding their business, realise the export of their goods and services overseas and obtain clear information on overseas markets," she added.

Leany said as a whole, Sarawak's entrepreneurs had still not sufficiently grasped the various incentives offered by Matrade to develop their export market.
