First Prasarana Trains From China Due In September
ZHUZHOU (CHINA), Feb 27 (Bernama) -- The first six car trains for the Ampang Line Extension Project (LEP) are expected to arrive in Malaysia by September this year.
Pasarana Project Development Division Group Director Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff said the latest and state-of-the-art trains made by CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd are part of the 50 car trains that will be delivered in stages starting September this year.
"The overall cost of the car trains is about RM1 billion, with 20 for replacement and another 30 for a new extension project which will be operating at the 11 new stations," he told reporters after visiting the CSR factory here today.
The trains will undergo testing and commissioning for six months.
The 17.7km Ampang extension line starts from Sri Petaling station, passes through Kinrara and Puchong, and ends at Putra Heights, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016.
Zulkifli said the Ampang Line overall project is 45 per cent completed, with the first phase expected to be completed by October next year.
"We forecast that the new set of trains will double passenger capacity from the current 200,000 to 400,000 per day," he said, adding they will improve service with trains running every 2.5 minutes.
Zulkifli said the new trains have CCTVs, special areas for disabled passengers and a dynamic display route system, while the walk-through features allow passengers to walk from one end to the other.
The trains have an automatic signalling system, with an attendant present to make emergency stops or open the doors.
"Everything is programmed as it is automatic, therefore efficiency and safety will be better.
"The public will be able to travel to anywhere in KL in an hour during peak hours, and research is ongoing following a request from residents in Shah Alam to set up a LRT service from Shah Alam to Klang," he added.
Other Prasarana officials in the visiting delegation included Director Datuk Nor Azmal Mohd Nazir, Alternate Director Azrin Abdul Majid, Group Finance Director Datuk Mohd Zahir Zahur Hussain and Group Rail Director Khairani Mohamed.
