Good Police Salaries Guarantee Security: Brazilian President
RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Friday that a well-paid and well-organized police force guaranteed a secure society, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
"The only way we can make sure that a policeman will not accept bribes from criminals is to pay him well enough to provide for his family," Lula explained.
On Friday, the president approved a new career plan related to the Federal District's police force and fire department. According to the plan, 12,000 officers would get promoted, which implied higher salaries for them, and another 3,000 officers would be recruited.
The new plan would have repercussions all over the country, Lula said, insisting it was necessary to consider that not all states could afford to pay such high salaries to the police.
The initial monthly salary of an officer in the Federal District exceeds 4,000 reais (RM7,921), much higher than that in many Brazilian states.
