Laos All Ready To Host Sea Games

From Zulkefli Salleh

VIENTIANE, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- Laos, which will be hosting the 25th SEA Games next month for the first time, is all system go to successfully hold the event, its Vice-Minister of Information and Culture Prof Dr Bosengkham Vongdara said.

All venues for the 25 sports and 383 programmes as well as other logistics were ready for the event, he said in a statement issued at the conference of information ministers of Asean and Japan, China and South Korea, which ended Friday.

"Judging from the progress made in various work activities, we can now announce that we are fully prepared to successfully host the Games," he said.

The construction of a new national stadium, with a capacity of 20,000 seats, had been fully completed and a hand-over ceremony was held on Sept 22, he said.

The national stadium sports complex also houses two indoor stadiums, tennis courts, swimming pools as well as shooting and archery ranges.

He said the opening and closing ceremonies for the Games as well as the men's final football match would be held at the national stadium.

The Asian Sport Federation would be invited to inspect and certify the technical standard and other requirements of each venue.

The host country also had also built a SEA Games Village which could accommodate 4,000 beds, which had also been handed over last September.

Vongdara said a health committee, in collaboration with the authorities concerned, had come up with measures against the A(H1N1), including installing temperature reading equipment at checkpoints.

On the city front, the Games atmosphere is already visible with stalls already selling souvenirs like t-shirts and key chains.

Buntings are lining the streets ahead of the Games on Dec 9-18.
