Tropical Depression Detected In South China Sea

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The Meteorological Department has detected the formation of a tropical depression in the South China sea, east of the Malaysian Peninsular, at 6.5 degrees north and 107.2 degrees east, about 470km northeast of the coast of Terengganu, with wind speed of up to 60kmph.

The tropical depression, which is moving slowly northwards/northeast direction, will cause rough seas with waves of up to 4.5 metres over the coastal waters of Samui (Kelantan and Terengganu), Tioman (Pahang and East Johor), Condore and Bunguran and is expected to continue until Nov 28.

A statement issued by the department today stated that the condition will also cause coastal areas of the east coast of the peninsula (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor) to be vulnerable to sea level rise which is dangerous to all shipping and coastal activities, including fishing and ferry services.

Strong northeasterly winds of 40kmph to 50kmph with waves up to 3.5 metres over waters off Sarawak, Reef North, Layang-layang, Palawan, Labuan and Sabah (West Coast and Kudat) is expected to continue until tomorrow.

The department also reported thunderstorm over waters of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, East Johor, West Sarawak, Bunguran, Condore, Reef North and Layang-layang until tomorrow, while in waters off Langkawi and Penang, the condition is expected to persist until this afternoon.

This condition can cause strong winds of up to 40kmph and rough seas with waves of up to 2.5 metres which is dangerous to small boats.
