Flood Situation In Terengganu, Kelantan Deteriorates Further
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The flood situation in Kelantan deteriorated further on Sunday night as compared to the afternoon with more people moved to relief centres in both the states.
Over a thousand people in Terengganu and 664 more in Kelantan had to be moved to flood relief centres tonight.
The water levels at the main rivers in Terennganu were also reported to be at danger levels.
Villagers in Kampung Pemberian near Kuala Krai, Kelantan were cut off when the bridge over Sungai Galas connecting them to Kampung Manjor was indundated under five metres of water since 10pm yesterday.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, flood evacuees rose to 5,641 people compared to 4,627 people this afternoon, a National Security Council spokesman said.
He said the most number of evacuees were in Hulu Terengganu involving 1,413 people, Kemaman (1,329), Setiu (1,059), Besut (1,008), Dungun (555) and 277 more in Marang.
He said relief centres opened now totalled 106 with 26 in Hulu Terengganu, Besut (24), Marang (seven), Dungun(11), Setiu (20) and Kemaman (18).
He added that federal roads closed were Sungai Tong to Kuala Berang (all traffic) while the coastal road from Kuala Terengganu to Kota Baharu is closed to light vehicles.
Elsewhere, 10 roads have been closed in the Hulu Terengganu district, Marang (seven), Setiu (six), Dungun (two ) and Besut(three).
Also a landslide on the road connecting Jalan Jerangau to Jabor in Bukit Diman, Ajil forced one lane on it to be closed.
The spokesman said water level recorded at Sungai Besut in Kampung La saw the water level rise to 20.72m, Sungai Setiu in Jambatan Permaisuri (9.28m), Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap (22.26m) and Kampung Bukit (17.25m).
In Sungai Berang, water level recorded at Pengkalan Ajal showed 17.14m (danger level 16m), Sungai Kemaman in Jambatan Jerangau 12.71m (danger level 12.5m) and Sungai Marang in Pengkalan Berangan, 14.16m (danger level 13.7m).
In KOTA BAHARU, water levels in Sungai Golok and Sungai Kelantan continued to rise, forcing 2,327 victims from 540 families to be evacuated to flood relief centres throughout the state tonight, compared with 1,663 in the afternoon.
A flood control operations room spokesman said Pasir Mas recorded the highest number of evacuees with 910, Kuala Krai (872), Tanah Merah (251), Pasir Puteh (36) and Machang (19).
From Bernama's observation, Rantau Panjang remained submerged in more than one metre of water and the army, stationed at the Kelantan-Thailand border, had to use naval boats to rescue victims.
Water level at Sungai Golok was recorded as 10.45m, well above the danger level of 9m, while water reading at the same river in Jenob, Tanah Merah was recorded as 24.66m (danger level 23.50m).
Sungai Kelantan at Tangga Krai recorded 26.54m (danger level 25m), Kusial Tanah Merah, 18.19m (danger level 16m) while the same river at Tambatan Diraja saw a slight increase above the 5m danger level when a reading of 5.03m was recorded.
No major roads were closed for traffic and no casualties were reported said the spokesman.
