Allocation For JKJR Slashed By RM24.7 Million
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- The government has reduced funds for the Road Safety Department (JKJR) by RM24.7 million next year, after considering the country's limited financial means and more important agendas.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said the JKJR was given RM69 million under the Administrative Expenditure 2009.
He said that next year, the department would only receive RM44.3 million.
"The amount has been determined by the country's need to reduce administrative expenditure for all ministries in 2010.
"The ministry can transfer the funds within the departments, according to their needs and programmes," he said at the Dewan Rakyat here on Thursday.
Dr Awang Adek said this in reply to a question from Fauziah Salleh (PKR-Kuantan) on why JKJR's allocation was slashed and not increased, considering their success in reducing road fatalities by 40 per cent.
He said the government was sure the allocation for JKJR was sufficient, adding that it was important the department carried out its duties effectively and increased productivity.
