20 Teams For LTdL 2010

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- Twenty teams will take part in the RM10 million Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2010 from March 1-7.

Youth and Sports secretary-general Datuk Mohd Yassin Salleh said 17 teams had confirmed taking part in the race covering seven states and two federal territories.

The riders will cover 1001.8km starting from Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Putrajaya, Selangor and ending at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.

"The ministry's involvement as sponsor is to make organising of sports an industry to contribute to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"It is also in line with efforts to make 2011 National Sports Industry Year," he told reporters after the launch here Thursday.

Yassin said the date had been delayed from the usual February to avoid clashing with the Chinese New Year.

LTdL 2010 chief executive officer Mohamed Salleh said the first stage from Kota Bharu ke Kuala Brang, a distance of 174.5km, would prove to be challeging.

"The riders will have to contend with strong winds and the hot weather, making the race an intriguing one," he said.

LTdL 2009 was monopolised by riders of Diquigiovanni-Androni team from Columbia which grabbed the overall title and three main prizes.

Jose Serpa Perez was the 'King Of The Hill' while Mattia Gavazzi was the 'Sprint King.'

Asia's best rider was Indonesian Tonton Susanto who represented Le Tua Cycling Team.
