More Flood Evacuees In Kelantan, Perlis

KOTA BAHARU, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- More people have been evacuated from flood-hit Kelantan and Perlis while all evacuees in Terengganu have returned to their homes.

In KELANTAN, the number of evacuees has risen to 4,151, up from 3,487 overnight.

A spokesman of the state flood operations room in Kota Baharu said these additional evacuees were from Rantau Panjang and Tumpat.

He also said that 49 evacuees have returned to their homes from the Machang flood relief centre.

All major roads in the state were passable to traffic, he said, adding that slight rain had been reported in several areas.

In Kuala Krai, floodwaters have submerged a bridge over the Sungai Galas in Kampung Pemberian nearby, cutting off road communication for about 1,000 villagers who are now using boats to cross the river.

Villager Mustapha Alias, 49, complained that the low bridge would be submerged every time the floods came.

The villagers expect the floodwaters to recede in about three days, and would have to resort to using boats to cross the river until then.

In PERLIS, floodwaters continued to rise in several low-lying areas in and around Kangar, forcing 247 people to be evacuated to three relief centres overnight.

Most of these evacuees were from Taman Intan, Repoh Selatan, Tok Kandang and Kampung Bakau, said chairman of the Social Welfare, Women's Development and Special Functions Committee Mansor Jusoh.

He also said that 300 people who were moved out from several areas in northern Perlis had returned to their homes after the floodwaters receded.

In TERENGGANU, the situation in flood-affected areas has returned to normal and all evacuees have returned to their homes.

In KEDAH, the number of evacuees had risen to 1,203 as at noon today, up from the 752 overnight.

Pokok Sena is the latest district to be hit, with 512 people moved to three relief centres, said state flood operations room spokesman Major Haris Padzilah Mohamed.

He said the floods had affected six villages -- Kampung Empa, Menerong, Bukit Hijau, Derang, Baru and Bukit.

"Some 516 evacuees remained at relief centres in Kubang Pasu and 175 in Padang Terap," he said when contacted by Bernama.

The level of Sungai Bata in Kubang Pasu was 9.22 metres, above the danger level of 9.15 metres, he added.
