IMT-GT To Embark On Eight Development Projects Worth RM2.2 Bln

MELAKA, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- The three-day Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Ministerial Meeting that ended on Thursday, has proposed eight development projects worth RM2.2 billion.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said four would be in Indonesia, three in Thailand and one in Malaysia.

Among them are the development of Sumatra ports and toll roads, Melaka-Dumai Economic Corridor Multimodal Transportation System and Melaka-Pekan Baru Power Interconnection Network.

The Thai projects are Southern Thailand Ports Development Programme and the construction of Pak Bara cargo port and Hat Yai-Sadoa toll road.

"Enhancing physical connectivity and better linkages between the three countries is a key and critical role in IMT-GT's development strategy," Nor told a press conference after the 16th IMT-GT Ministerial Meeting here.

He said IMT-GT could also venture into halal products and tourism including medical tourism due to its growth potential. "I also call for IMT-GT to jointly initiate and explore together in venturing into new markets," he said.

IMT-GT was established in 1993 with the aim of accelarating economic growth. Its programmes are private sector driven and facilitated by the relevant ministries in each member country.

A total of 200 delegates attended the meeting. Also present were representatives from Japan, the Asean Secretariat, Asian Development Bank, Economic Research Institute for Asean and East Asia and IMT-GT Joint Business Council.

The meeting, among others, deliberated on the progress of implementation of the IMT-GT Roadmap to Development 2007-2011 which includes development in priority areas namely tourism, halal products and services, agriculture, transportation and human resources development, as well as the future direction of IMT-GT beyond 2011.
