Kedah JPS director Abdul Qahar Osman said Sungai Titi Teras would be deepen and widen in the first phase of the project to prevent it from swelling during heavy downpour.
He said more people might be evacuated as floodwaters in three affected villages - Kampung Titi Teras, Kampung Teroi Bukit and Kampung Sungai Malai - had not receded.
Until 2.45pm, the number of evacuees rose from 226 to 500, he said when briefing Yan District Officer Abdul Rahman Zainon on the flood situation.
The residents took refuge at the mosques in the villages which had been turned into relief centres.
Kampung Titi Teras has the most number of flood victims (338 people from 78 families) followed by Kampung Teroi Bukit (100 people from 28 families) and Kampung Sungai Malai (62 people from 15 families).
