Teacher's Manual On Bully Prevention In School Launched

KUALA TERENGGANU, May 15 (Bernama) -- In conjunction with National Teachers' Day celebrations on Saturday, a book titled "Manual Guru: Pencegahan Buli di Sekolah" (Teacher's Manual: Preventing Bullies in School) was launched by Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said.

The 150-page book selling for RM24, was published as a complete guideline for teachers at school on how to handle bullying incidents among students in the country.

he book's chief writer, Prof Datin Dr Noran Fauziah Yaakub said, the manual produced with cooperation and support of various parties that had conducted a pioneer programme on intervention on bullies at various schools in the Klang Valley.

"We have received information from respondents consisting of secondary school students, parents and teachers," she said in a statement here Friday.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will officiate the National Teachers' Day celebrations Saturday at the Islamic Civilization Park, Pulau Wan Man, near here.

Noran Fauziah said the study was funded by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), while HELP University College began the initiative to publish the manual.

"We hope this book will be used by all schools in Malaysia as a guide in tackling the issue of bully incidents," she said.

She said the manual was divided into three parts based on the three-stage approach which is school, classroom and individual and is then further divided into 12 modules.

At the school level, she said the guide gives an idea of how to start a programme to handle bullies, form an anti-bully policy, school practices and how to evaluate the programme's effectiveness.

She said at the classroom level, information will be given about practices in the classroom, children's rights and responsibilities, what is meant by bullying, bullies and how they bully, identifying a bully and the role of a witness in a bullying incident.

For the individual, she said teachers are guided on how to manage and support students involved as well as guidance techniques on how to handle bullies.

The manual was jointly published by Utusan Publications & Distributors Sdn Bhd and HELP University College's Faculty of Behavioural Science.
