Need For Telco Firms To Push For Countrywide Broadband Penetration, Says Sabah Minister
KOTA KINABALU, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Telecommunication companies, particularly those based in Sabah, have been urged to offer facilities in Sabah that are of similar standards with that offered in other states in the country.
This will help the country reach its aim of 50 percent broadband penetration rate nationwide by 2010, Sabah Minister of Resources and Information Technology Development, Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, said.
It will also help position Malaysia among the leading countries in Asean's Information Communication Technology arena.
However, all these can be achieved only if the basic digital broadband infrastructure is in place nationwide including in Sabah, he said during the launch of the ICT Fiesta 2008 at the Likas Sports Complex Hall here today.
"I believe if the basic infrastructure for this digital era is made properly available by the parties responsible, the people of Sabah will gain."
Quoting the report of an ICT survey covering various parties, he said Sabah was among the states that have yet to explore the sector intensively.
Broadband penetration rate in Malaysia this year has reached 15 percent, but in Sabah, the penetration rate is still below the national percentage.
Yee said the state government has also made plans to further develop the ICT sector including expanding the use of new technologies and Internet.
