Submarine Cable To Link EAGA Member Countries

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- A submarine cable project linking the Philippines and its counterparts in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), and other Asian nations, is now being eyed.

This followed a recent meeting of the BIMP-EAGA Working Group on information and communications technology (ICT) in Cagayan De Oro, Mindanao.

A statement issued by the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo), here today said the proposal was presented by EA Trilink, a Philippine telecommunications company, during the said meeting on Nov 10.

The proposed project will link the Philippines with proposed fiber optic links in EAGA, via Mindanao.

A joint study was conducted by Malaysia's Danawa Resources Sdn Bhd and SACOFA with PT Trans Hybrid of Indonesia to implement the proposed Kuching-Pontianak Fibre Optic Link, a 150km cable system project between Tebedu in Kuching and Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

A terrestrial fiber optic network is available from Sarawak, through SACOFA to Sabah (CT-Sabah) via Brunei Darussalam through TelBru.

The network can further connect with the rest of the world through the submarine cable namely SEA-ME-WE3 (SMW3) and Asia-America Gateway (AAG) in Tungku Cable Station (TelBru) Brunei Darussalam.
