"One Family, One Saving" Proposed For Indian Families

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- With more students attaining excellent results in their examinations and the limited places in public educational institutions, the MIC has urged Indian parents to save more for their children's education.

MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu proposed a "One Family, One Saving" scheme to ensure their children's future, especially when they qualify to enter universities or intend to go overseas.

He said Kooperasi Didik (Kop Didik), which was formed through the MIC's effort, now had 34,220 members with investments totaling RM5.7 million for their children's education.

"The interest among Indian parents to save for the future educational needs of their children is increasing," he said when opening Kop Didik's annual general meeting here Saturday.

Besides Kop Didik, the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) fund run by the MIC had disbursed almost RM90 million in study loans and grants, he said.

He said Kop Didik had also launched the Higher Education Saving Scheme which to date had registered 2,252 members with investments totaling RM3.3 million.

Kop Didik also took insurance coverage with a local insurance company on its members to ensure their children would receive the benefits.

"We (the MIC) will continue to place priority on education and savings for the future of our children," Samy Vellu added.
