EC Tracing 476,000 Eligible Voters In Sarawak
KUCHING, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Election Commission (EC) Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said it is tracing 476,668 people as only 930,888 of the 1.4 million eligible voters in the state have registered.
"They do not care, are unaware of the importance of their rights as voters and feel that they will not make a big difference to the political scene. Moreover, action can't be taken against them.
"But to EC, every voter has a bearing on the smooth running of the country's democratic process.
"They will decide who will form the government," he said after making a courtesy call on Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at the new state assembly building here Tuesday.
Abdul Aziz said Sarawak EC had launched several programmes to trace eligible voters including launching the outreach programme by opening counters at shopping centres but response was still poor.
"Only 28,541 people who reached 21 years-old registered as voters in the first ten months of the year. Of the number, only seven percent are between 21 to 29 years-old.
He said the meeting with Abdul Taib was a normal visit and had nothing to do with the state elections expected in 2011.
