National Library Targets 10 Million Members Next Year

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- The National Library hopes to increase its nationwide membership from 7.8 million to 10 million next year, director-general Datuk Raslin Abu Bakar said.

He said to this end, the library was integrating the membership process where it will become a one-stop service centre to speed up procedures.

"They only need to register online once at selected centres to qualify for service from all public libraries in the country," he said after the launch of its Quality Day here Tuesday.

Raslin said the library was also upgrading ICT infrastructure to develop an information gateway to provide customers with fast, accurate and efficient service.

They include digital initiatives like the National Union Catalogue (book search), U-Library (books by post), development of content, portal and an integrated database.

He said with U-Library, the public could borrow books from libraries in other states which would be delivered to homes by Pos Malaysia.

"If previously, the concept was from library to library, now it has become from library to individual," he added.

The pilot project will involve the Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur and Intan Bukit Kiara public libraries.
