IPOH, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- The floods situation in Perak is still bad as the number of people evacuated in the Kerian district rose to 1,166 Tuesday morning up from 545 Monday.
District police chief, Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan, said all the new flood victims were moved beginning at midnight till 8am today.
He said all of them were housed in six schools and a 'surau'.
When contacted by Bernama, Fauzi said the victims were evacuated from 11 areas which were Kampung Changkat Lobak, Kampung Selekoh, Kampung Beriah, Kampung Simpang Empat, Kampung Simpang Lima, Kampung Matang Tengah, Kampung Sungai Semambu, Kampung Matang Pasir, Ladang Sungai Bogak, Ladang Sungai Kerian and Kampung Yau Shin.
He said the continuous heavy rain over six days and water overflow from the Bukit Merah dam caused the areas to be inundated with water up to about one metre.
He said Jalan Bagan Serai-Selama at kilometre 10 till 17 was still closed to all traffic.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in Selama improved when water receded and 72 people from two villages were allowed to go home.
