Ali Admits Maim Not Managed Well

MELAKA, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has admitted that the Melaka Islamic Council (Maim) was not managed well causing delay in delivering aid to the poor.

He said to address the problem, a new secretary had been appointed to facilitate food aid, aid to deceased family members and kidney treatment.

"I have an open attitude. Those with aid requests can contact me via SMS," he said when replying a question by Datuk Tahir Hasan (BN-Paya Rumput) in the state assembly here Wednesday.

Ali who is also Maim chairman said he had directed Maim to open a registration book for the applications but it was not done.

Maim had approved 10,291 or 92 percent of the 10,723 applications received, with 7,545 applications for food aid.

"Of the RM7.8 million distributed, RM5.3 million was for food aid monthly," he said.

State Public Works and Utilities committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said the installation of lighting at the Cheng-MITC junction costing RM1.7 million began on Sept 29.

He told Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdul Latip (BN-Durian Tunggal) that poor lighting along the Ayer Keroh-Sungai Udang highway proved a danger to motorists.

The assembly continues tomorrow.
