Call For More City Buses

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- Sabah's Chartered Institute of Logistic and Transport Malaysia (CILT) has urged the relevant authorities, especially the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB), to look into letting more city buses ply routes within the city centre.

Its chairman, Ramli Amir, in a statement on Tuesday, said the board seemed to be "slow in implementing their part of the bargain" as the body that issues licences to commercial vehicles.

"The City Bus system, to be efficient and effective at the same time, must have enough buses to ply the two routes designated by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (KKCH). For now, there are 13 buses or at the most 15 buses on the road serving the route.

"How many is enough? The idea is to have a bus passing through a point every five minutes. However, with just 13 to 15 buses the current situation is that buses do come by at every 30 minutes," said Ramli.

The City Bus system, implemented in Jun 1, was to ease traffic congestion within the city centre, where no other buses can ply the routes designated by the KKCH.

Ramli said he was suprised that the issue of not enough buses on the streets was not addressed during the visit of Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz to the Wawasan Bus Terminal last Saturday.

He suggested that a second operator be allowed to ply the routes.
