Singapore Registered Oil Tanker On Fire Near Tanjung Lipat

KOTA KINABALU, July 18 (Bernama) -- MT Sinar Agra, a Singapore registered oil tanker caught fire when trying to anchor about one nautical mile to the north of Tanjung Lipat near Pulau Plompang here Saturday.

According to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the ship was on its way to dock at Pelabuhan Sepanggar when the foxle of the ship caught fire, causing burns to a crew member from Indonesia, known as Marcel William.

Kota Kinabalu MMEA enforcement head Captain Xavier Thevadas Gnanapragasam said the crew member who suffered burns in his hand and leg was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

"About 7.05pm, the Sabah and Labuan Maritime Operations Centre received a call from a KM Berani officer on patrol near Sepanggar, claiming he heard a loud explosion.

"The ship with 18 crew members, 16 Indonesians and one each from Romania and Singapore was heading to Pelabuhan Sepanggar to unload liquid gasoline. The fire was brought under control and investigations are being carried out ascertain the cause of the fire," he said.
