More Villages Getting Micro-hydro Electricity System

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 24 (Bernama)-- More villages in the interior of the country will be installed with the micro hydro-electricity system, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas.

He said the micro-hydro generators were found suitable for rural areas as they were cheaper to run and not posing a threat to the environment.

"Many villages in the interior of Sabah and Sarawak are still not link to the electricity grid.

"We will study the effect of the micro-hydro electricity system in both states before expanding the programme," he told reporters after presenting grants of USD50,000 (RM183,162) each to 13 non-government organisations to carry out the environmental rehabilitation projects.

They include the Sarawak Chapter of the Malaysian Indigenous People Institute, which is carrying out the Integrated Community Based Micro-Hydro System in Mudung Abung, Belaga and the Bario Asal community project in the Kelabit Highlands, both in Sarawak.
