Besraya Highway Toll At Salak Selatan Abolished

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- Toll collection at the Salak Jaya Toll Plaza in the Sungai Besi Highway (Besraya), Kuala Lumpur has been abolished starting 12.30pm today, Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed said.

Mohd Zin said though the decision was only supposed to take effect starting March 1, Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd, the concessionaire for the highway had agreed to stop toll collection four days earlier.

"The decision to stop toll collection four days earlier was a very noble gesture by Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd.

"About 50,000 road users, including residents of Pekan Sungai Besi, Kampung Malaysia, Kuchai Lama, Taman Salak Selatan and Kampung Baru Salak Selatan would enjoy a toll free ride from Jalan Istana to Pekan Sungai Besi," he said at a ceremony to announce the decision here today.

He added that since the toll plaza was not strategically located, road users normally used the Kuchai Lama and Pekan Salak Selatan roads to avoid toll, causing traffic congestion in both the areas.

Road users heading to Kuala Lumpur or from Kuala Lumpur, had to pay RM1.30 (one way) since May 1999.

Meanwhile, Mohd Zin said the government would go ahead with building an extension of the Besraya Highway to connect the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) to Jalan Istana comprising a distance of 12km, at a cost of RM649 million, to reduce traffic congestion.

The project awarded to Besraya via a tender exercise managed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).

Work on the project would start soon and expected to be completed in three years.

He added that according to statistics, the MRR1 and MRR2 had exceeded their capacity by 100 per cent at areas involving Jalan Istana, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Cheras and Jalan Tun Razak.
