Redtone To Expand Wireless Broadband Service In Sarawak

KUCHING, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- REDtone International Bhd will expand its high-speed wireless broadband service coverage to Miri and Sibu by next year.

Miri will be able to receive coverage by the first quarter of 2010 while Sibu will be connected by the end of 2010, said executive director Lau Bik Soon.

"For Kuching, we have covered most of populated areas such as commercial areas, industrial parks, business districts and shopping centres," he said at a media briefing here Monday.

Lau said REDtone will stick to it core business target in Sarawak and Sabah by marketing its products to the corporate and business community during their expansion.

"Soon we will come up with packages for home users next month with a different price structure from the present one, catering to light and heavy users," he said.

REDtone, which holds the 2.3 GHz Wimax licence for Sarawak and Sabah, launched its broadband Wimax service in Kuching in April this year.

In Sabah, REDtone's wireless broadband service is already available in Kota Kinabalu while plans are in the pipeline to provide similar coverage in Sandakan and Tawau.

REDtone's group chief executive officer Zainal Amanshah said the company had committed to invest RM20 million for Sarawak and Sabah with RM7 million having been spent.

Asked whether the present price of broadband packages for Sarawak will be reviewed, Zainal said the company was seeking to offer more competitive packages in future to cater to the demand of certain market segments.

Presently, the five packages available are basic(RM138 monthly subscription fee), Bizlite 1Mb (RM250 monthly subscription fee), Bizlite 2Mb (RM480 monthly subscription fee), Bizpro 1Mb (RM588 monthly subscription fee), and Bizpro 2Mb (RM1,088 monthly subscription fee).
