Construction Of Second Penang Bridge Follows Schedule
BATU KAWAN, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Construction work on the Second Penang Bridge is progressing according to schedule, although there are some delay in the early stage of its implementation.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said package one and two of the project, costing RM2.2 billion and RM1.55 billion respectively, were expected to be ready before 2013.
"This iconic project for Penang is professionally managed, with seven per cent of the construction work in progress.
"Upon completion of this project, transportation service in Penang will be more efficient and will boost economy," he told reporters after visiting the site of the bridge project here on Saturday.
On implementation of package three of the bridge project, costing RM750 million, Nor Mohamed said it would be awarded through the open tender system and priority would be given to companies in Penang.
"Package three involves road construction on both ends of the bridge, which stretches six kilometres on the island and six kilometres on the mainland," he added.
The 26-km Second Penang Bridge project, which will link Batu Maung on the island to Batu Kawan on the mainland, is jointly built by UEM Builders and China Harbour Engineering.
