Foochow Community Can Help Transform Economy - Kong

KUCHING, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- The Foochow community can play a vital role in transforming the country's economy into a higher-income economy, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said on Sunday.

He said the Foochow, known for their diligence and pioneering spirit, could make Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's vision of transforming the economy, from a middle to a higher income-based economy, a reality through their vast expertise and experience in business operations.

"Having ventured into and achieved successes in various sectors, especially in the business world, they can play a significant role in assisting the government's efforts to recover the national economy from the adverse impact of the global economy," he told reporters after opening the Federation of Foochow Associations of Malaysia annual general meeting here.

He said the greatest task faced by the government at present was to attract foreign investments by competing with other countries, including China and Indonesia, as well as prevent local funds from flowing overseas.

Earlier, Federation of Foochow Associations of Malaysia president Tan Sri Jimmy Lau Hieng Wei said members of the community needed to maintain its spirit of unity and cooperation in tandem with the 1Malaysia concept besides working closely with other races in the country rather than picking on petty issues.
