SUHAKAM Suggests Detector Installed In Prison To Prevent Suicide

JOHOR BAHARU, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) suggested that detectors be installed to detect prisoners' movements to avoid suicide in prison cells.

Suhakam commissioner Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam said the problem could also be checked if medical check-up on inmates could be conducted more often by the Prisons Department.

"The detector will be able to detect the inmates. For example, if the detector fails to detect any movement from an inmate after 20 minutes, which could indicate there is something wrong with the inmate, it will trigger an alarm.

"This will then send the prison staff to check on the inmate concerned," he told reporters after visiting the Ayer Molek Prison here Wednesday.

The visit was made following the death of a detainee, J. Saravanan, 22, who was found hanged, with a rope made from a pillow case and towel tied together, from a lattice at about 9pm last Nov 15.

Siva Subramaniam also said there was a need to classify inmates involved in high-profile cases, like incest, rape or murder as suicidal, hence placing them under a category in need of medical attention, including psychiatric treatment.
