Government May Implement Health Funding Scheme In 10MP

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- The government plans to set up a health funding scheme under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) to help patients pay for their medical treatment, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Tuesday.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said a series of discussions had been held to fine tune the scheme.

At present poor patients could seek help from the National Health Welfare Fund to pay for their medical treatment at government hospitals, she said in her reply to a question from Hee Loy Sian (DAP-Petaling Jaya Selatan).

Hee wanted to know whether the government would implement a comprehensive national health welfare scheme for the people and stop the practice of seeking donations for medical treatment through the media.

Rosnah said pamphlets on the fund, which was set up in 2005, were available at government hospitals and clinics, health offices, and private hospitals.

The media donation drive to pay for medical treatment of the needy is monitored by the Health Ministry, she said, adding that with implementation of the health funding scheme, the donation campaign would be curtailed.
