| Apathetic Teachers To Face The Music - Puad Zarkashi |

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- The Education Ministry would take immediate action on apathetic teachers so that their non committal attitude will not disrupt the education system in the country said deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
"There are no specific statistics on such teachers but the ministry will not take things lightly or allow it to become a culture. Such issues must be given serious consideration because it can become a collective culture among teachers," he told reporters after opening the seventh National Convention for Excellent Teachers here on Monday.
Mohd Puad said among reasons identified for such attitude among teachers was due to personal reasons like tension due to matrimonial problems and perception of the people on teachers.
He cited the tragedy in Kuala Dipang, Perak as an example whereby parents of three pupils who drowned in the Kuala Dipang bridge tragedy on Oct 26, decided to file a RM105 million suit alleging negligence on the part of 10 parties, including teachers.
"Cases like that can add on pressure on teachers who were involved," he said.
Mohd Puad said to avoid such instances, the ministry would tighten terms and conditions when appointing new teachers starting next year, to ensure only those interested in educating students are employed.
He added that the ministry would also work hard to increase the number of excellent teachers from the current total of 9,293.
Meanwhile, Mohd Puad also welcomed a proposal by the National Parents Teachers Association (PIBGN) to allow parents or guardians to cane students identified with discipline problems in schools.
"The caning of students, carried out behind closed doors by their own parents or guardians, is the right move to curtail indiscipline among students in schools.
"If teachers caned the students, it may be turned into an issue but at the same time we cannot compromise indiscipline, so the proposal is a very positive one," he said.
