| Chinese Men Held Over Fraud Jewellery Cleaning Service |

KOTA BAHARU, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Two Chinese nationals have been detained to help in the investigation into a jewellery cleaning service which erodes precious metal, causing it to weigh much less after the procedure.
Kelantan Commercial Crimes Investigation Department chief Supt Hamzah Alias said today they preyed on unsuspecting customers whose gold jewellery could lose up to 37 grams in weight.
"The two were detained in Kampung Gual Ipoh, Tanah Merah, on Sunday after we received reports from the victims," he told reporters at his office, here.
Hamzah said the men, aged 29 and 36, were nabbed in front of a sundry shop while carrying out the cleaning service for RM3 per item of jewellery.
Among the items seized from them were the liquid jewellery cleaner, cleaning utensils and small nuggets believed to be gold, he said.
Hamzah said the victims incurred losses of between RM1,400 and RM7,500 due to the weight loss of the jewellery after they had the items checked at a nearby jewellery shop.
Both the men would be remanded for four days to assist in the investigation into the case, the first of its kind in the country, he said.
He advised other people who had been cheated by the duo to lodge police reports.
