Two South Americans Again Nabbed For Theft

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Two Latin American men with Chilean passports who were deported in September for petty theft were detained again by police for snatching the laptop of a New Zealander at a fast food restaurant in KL Sentral here on Oct 28.

Police are investigating if they were part of an international theft syndicate, Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Talib told reporters Tuesday.

"We are checking to see if they are really from Chile and why they turned up here again when we had deported them to Chile in September," he said, adding that police believed they used different identities to enter the country since November last year.

He said that with their arrest, police solved 33 theft cases in the KL Sentral area, mostly involving mobile telephones and laptops.

On Oct 28, the duo snatched the laptop of a New Zealander who was at McDonalds at 3.30pm.

Meanwhile, a man and a woman, both 21, were nabbed on Oct 29 for stealing from people while they performed prayers at a surau in the Mid Valley shopping mall.

Wan Abdul Bari said police received more than four reports from victims who missed their personal items such as wallets, mobile telephones and bank cards after their prayers.

He said the two suspects pretended to either start or finish praying to catch their victims unawares.

They admitted to committing 23 thefts on that one day, and police recovered five mobile phones and an undisclosed sum of cash from them.
