MCA Heads To Another Heated Central Committee Meeting

By Alan Ting

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The MCA central committee (CC) meets Tuesday as speculation mounts on whether a fresh party poll would be called to resolve the leadership crisis.

Three possible outcomes are as follows: the en bloc resignation of the committee to pave the way for a new poll; an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to allow delegates to decide whether to hold a fresh poll; or, to stick with the 'Greater Unity Plan" to be tabled by party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

There is talk that in the past few days, some former party leaders, including past president Tan Koon Swan and former deputy president Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek are working behind the scenes to help resolve the issue.

Party sources said former deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek was agreeable to the 'Greater Unity Plan' which would see some of his supporters being appointed to party posts.

But, this was opposed by some CC members who want to maintain those appointed earlier by the president, including those who rebelled against Ong, because the former did not want their own positions jeopardised.

"That's why, some of them prefer to push for fresh polls if the 'Greater Unity Plan' included giving away some appointed positions to Dr Chua's supporters," said one source.

Wong Nai Chee, one of the 16 CC members who asked for an EGM, said they opposed because the plan should have been proposed before the party EGM on Oct 10.

"The way I see it, it is more like a distribution plan. You should not have a peace plan after the EGM. It doesn't make any sense. There is no credibility because it does not comply with the EGM decision of Oct 10," he said.

Wong said the 16 CC members would first push for an en bloc resignation of the committee, failing which, they would demand for an EGM.

The key outcome of the Oct 10 EGM was a vote of no-confidence in Ong, and the reinstatement of Dr Chua as party member but not restoring his deputy presidency, following his sex video scandal.

Another CC member, Datuk Ti Lian Ker, wanted the unity plan, seeing it as the most viable solution to end the crisis, as advised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

"Those who are against the president, particularly the appointed CC members, should honourably resign. Everybody is talking along the unity plan now, why should you go against it?

"If you want to have unity, you must include Dr Chua's supporters, in order to be inclusive," he reasoned.

Loh Seng Kok, also a CC member, is comfortable with either options.

"Either one is not a problem for us. We support the unity plan but if the majority decides to go for a fresh poll, I don't see any problem," he said.
