JAKARTA, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has decided to set up an independent team to verify the legal facts on the case of detained Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputies Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M Hamzah, Antara news agency reported Monday.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto told a press conference here Susilo would soon issue a presidential decree on the establishment of the eight-member team, to be headed by Presidential Advisory Council member Adnan Buyung Nasution.
He said the team could complete its work in less than two weeks but seeing the dynamics developing in the society in response to the Bibit-Chandra case, the team was expected to work more quickly.
"We are going to do clarification work and check all the facts and the process of the case," the senior minister said, adding that the decision to form an independent team was made by the president after meeting with prominent figures on Sunday night at the State Guest House.
"The president said the present development of the case was not good for the nation's life because of mistrust and distrust towards not only our laws but also to the credibility of the police, prosecutors and the KPK itself," Djoko said.
Meanwhile, a Jakarta Post report said the fact-finding team established by Susilo would likely serve only to calm mounting public anger over the arrests of the two corruption watchdog KPK deputies.
Team chairman Adnan, also a prominent lawyer, said Monday the establishment of the team was in response to the growing "mistrust" of the people.
"I ask the citizens for their patience. Let us together lower our temperature, given the president's quick response," he was quoted as saying.
