| Strong Gush Of Water At Waterfall Caused By Burst Natural Dams |
|
IPOH, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The strong gush of water at the Batu Berangkai Waterfall in Kampar, resulting in the death of three Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) students Sunday, was due to an accumulation of rain water becoming trapped upstream in a "natural dam" which burst, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said.
He said the natural dams were usually formed by fallen trees and branches.
"Heavy rain and water pressure which is very strong can cause dams like that to burst," he told reporters after a visit to the Perak Fire and Rescue Department here Monday.
Kong advised the public to exercise caution when going for picnics at waterfalls, especially during the rainy season.
He said he would get local authorities to erect warning sign boards at such picnic sites as a reminder to the public.
Kampar district police chief Supt Abdul Aziz Salleh had also advised the public against going to Batu Berangkai Waterfall here for picnics during the current weather condition.
The three students who drowned when swept by strong currents while bathing at the water fall yesterday were male students Yew Ghim Chnieh and James Khor Wan Kai, both aged 20 and from Penang, and female student Yew Shy Gin, 21, from Sungai Petani, Kedah.
