| Handicrafts Produced By Inmates Generate RM6 Million For Prisons Department |

KAJANG, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- Handicrafts produced by prison inmates from January till September this year generated an income of RM6 million for the Prisons Department compared to only RM5.5 million in the same period last year, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop.
He said this was a boon for the inmates as it not only helped in their rehabilitation but would also enable them to become dealers or instructors in the crafts industry upon their release.
"The ministry is targetting to open more galleries in every zone including in the East Coast, Sabah and Sarawak to commercialise products made by prison inmates," he told reporters after launching the Prison's Day celebration at the Prisoner's College here Monday.
The products include batik, weaved songket, handicraft decorations and souvenirs and are currently sold at reasonable prices at a gallery in the Home Ministry Complex in Dusun Datuk Murad in Malacca.
In another development, Pos Malaysia will open a mini post office at the Kajang Prison Complex here following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the company and the Prisons Department at the Kajang Prison Complex here Monday.
Pos Malaysia was represented by its chairman Datuk Seri Dr. Aseh Che Mat while Prisons Department Director-General Datuk Zulkifli Omar represented the department at the signing of the MoU.
