Ministry To Table Working Paper On Rural Hypermarket

PETALING JAYA, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry will table a working paper to the cabinet soon on whether to allow the setting up of hypermarkets in rural areas.

Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the ministry had discussed the matter with petty traders and studied the pros and cons of setting up the facility.

"We listened to the problems brought up by petty traders who felt that the proposal might affect them in terms of losing customers to hypermarkets," he told reporters after launching Tesco's "Everyday Savers Package" at Tesco Mutiara Damansara here Monday.

He said the rural people, however, would want to enjoy similar shopping experience and discounts as enjoyed by their counterparts in urban areas.

Tesco's "Everyday Savers Package" is to help customers spend less on their shopping and includes slashing prices of popular fresh products by another RM6 million, taking the total investment in price savings for customers to more than RM26 million since the start of 2009.

"This is part of our ongoing quarterly commitment to help customers spend less," said Tesco Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Chriss Bush.

The package, among others, covers price cuts for popular fresh products such as fruits, vegetables, seafood and chicken by an average of 20 per cent.

Commenting on the package, Ismail Sabri said he would encourage other hypermarket operators to emulate the move by Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd in introducing similar package for consumers.
