Landslide Cuts Off Road To War Museum

PENANG, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The road to the War Museum atop Bukit Batu Maung here has become unusable to traffic following a landslide which is feared will trigger further earth movement due to passing vehicles, according to the museum's chief executive officer Johari Shafi.

The landslide occurred at about 9pm yesterday during heavy rain, said Johari, who suspected project development which encroached onto a buffer zone had caused the earth movement.

He said he had lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the matter.

Johari expressed disappointment over alleged inaction by the authorities, and told reporters at the scene: "I have made complaints to various agencies such as the Public Works Department, the Penang Municipal Council and the District Office on the felling of trees by developers and the removal of soil from the hillslope."

"I want to know why no action was taken against the developers although they had encroached onto the buffer zone," he said.

Johari said it was even more disappointing that the authorities pointed fingers at one another after he had complained of a landslip in the area earlier.

"What I had feared would happen has come true. I was worried about the safety of the people, especially children, who visit the museum. Luckily, the incident happened when there was no one around," he said.

A check by Bernama Monday saw about 200 pupils walking one kilometre to the museum as their bus had to be left at the foot of the hill.
