Fire Destroys 16 Stalls In Taman Ria Market

SUNGAI PETANI, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Sixteen stall owners lost their belongings when fire razed their stalls at the Taman Ria market here at about 3pm Thursday.

The fire, believed to have started from the back portion of the market, spread rapidly, preventing the stall owners who have been plying their trade in the market for more than 20 years, from salvaging their belongings.

Sungai Petani Fire and Rescue Department officer Anuar Zaini Zakaria said 72 firemen and 12 fire engines from Sungai Petani, Tikam Batu and volunteer units in the area were deployed to the area at 3.15pm.

"When we arrived the fire was at its height and spreading very past due to the afternoon heat," he told reporters at the site.

One of the stall owners, Chin Soo said he was storing his goods when he heard shouts of fire and rushed out of the building immediately without salvaging anything.

"We could only stand and watch as the fire spread very quickly," he said.

He added that since the water pressure was low, the firemen had difficulty in dousing the fire.
