PENANG, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- The Penang government is to relocate all the 15 traders at the entrance of the Botanical Gardens to a new location near Moon Gate as the premises are to be demolished for an expansion project of the gardens.
State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said all the traders and shopowners had agreed to shift their shop to shophouses near Moon Gate.
However, a coffee-shop owner had requested for a bigger lot near Moon Gate, saying that his current premises were bigger, he told reporters.
"We are offering a bigger space for him at the new location and, at the same time, we will also allocate a lot for him at the new Tourist Pavilion under the RM7-million expansion plan for the gardens," he said.
Law said the first phase Bambusetum and the second phase Eco-Stream Walk of the project had been going on smoothly, adding that the Bambusetum would feature up to 80 different species of bamboo located at the former Coronation Camp.
"We are now working on the third and fourth phases of the project, which include a recreation area and a one-stop centre for tourists, known as the Tourist Pavilion," he said, adding that the project was expected to be completed by September next year.
He said the Tourist Pavilion, to be built as a one-stop centre for tourists at the new entrance, opposite the existing Horticulture Centre, would have a gallery, souvenir shops and information booths.
"The recreation area will be built at the current entrance of the botanical gardens, and will feature a relaxation area for joggers complete with ponds and water features," he said.
