Penang Hill Train Service Distrupted Again

PENANG, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Over 100 Penang Hill holidaymakers received a refund following an electrical problem again in the engine room at the upper station this morning.

Many of them were paid after the Penang Hill operation office announced a disruption in the service.

Yesterday, about 500 holidaymakers were stranded on the hill for four hours following an electrical problem in the engine room at the upper station.

Teacher Mohd Idris Kamaruddin, 39, from Taiping, who was celebrating Hari Raya with his family, was disappointed with the disruption in the service.

"It is better to seek a refund and visit other tourism spots as the glitch has spoilt my family's vacation plan," he told Bernama.

Idris, however, said would visit Penang Hill after its upgrading works were completed.

Wilson Steve, 45, from Australia, who is visiting Penang for the first time, said he had a refund and would visit the Kek Lok Si temple.

"I will come here again in the next few days and hopefully the technical problem will be solved by then," he said.

Meanwhile, a spokesman from Penang Hill operation office, said the electrical problem which disrupted the service last night was only fixed temporarily.

"This led to the same problem at 8am. However, the service was restored at 11.10am.

"The breakdown affected 60 tourists before the contractors took three hours to rectify the problem," he said.

He said the increase in the number of trips during Hari Raya holiday has strained the engine.
