Aceh's Arabica Coffee To Have IG Patent

BANDA ACEH, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Central Aceh Regent Nasaruddin has projected that the arabica coffee that is grown here will be patented under the geographical indications (IG) system next year, bolstering the Indonesian commodity in the international market, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported.

"The documents and requirements for securing a patent are now already in the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights at the Ministry of Human Rights, so we have projected the issuance of the patent in 2010," he said in Takengon, Tuesday.

Arabica coffee from the Gayo highlands has the opportunity to be protected under the geographical indications system, because Indonesian commodity is already very popular both in the domestic and international market.

Gayo coffee also has a distinctive taste, because it was raised without any chemical fertilizers, so that the coffee is better known as organic coffee.

The Gayo highlands and the traditional knowledge in coffee processing also have a chance to secure an IG certificate.

With an altitude of an average of 1,000 metres above sea level and the Gayo highlands are highly suitable for raising arabica coffee.

With these factors, it is clear that the Gayo highlands have the key IG components of protection, he said.

Nasaruddin said that the Aceh government in cooperation with the Aceh Coffee Forum, which is supported by the Aceh Partnership for Economic Development (APED), kept trying to secure a patent for Central Aceh.
