PUTRAJAYA, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has served a letter of demand to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad seeking for an apology and compensation in relation to the defamatory words allegedly uttered by the former Prime Minister.
The letter of demand was served by Anwar's lawyer S.N.Nair to Dr Mahathir's solicitors, V.K.Lingam & Co, about 12.45pm Friday at the firm's office in Menara Berjaya at KL Plaza in Kuala Lumpur. In the letter of demand, Anwar, a former Deputy prime Minister, wants Dr Mahathir to give full and unqualified apology in writing within 14 days and the apology was to be published in all the major newspapers and electronic media of Anwar's choice. He also sought compensation of RM100 million. The content of the letter of demand also stated that Anwar's lawyers had instructions from Anwar to institute legal proceedings if the demand was not adhered. Anwar alleged that Dr Mahathir had uttered defamatory words about him at a press conference at Suhakam, in Menara Tun Razak last Sept 9 which was reported by news agencies, wire services and non-electronic and electronic media. On Sept 2 last year, the Federal Court freed the former deputy prime minister on sodomy charges. -- BERNAMA |
