SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Selangor has become a developed state because of the pro-development, pro-investors and people-friendly approach adopted by the past and present state leadership as well as the close cooperation between the state and federal governments in developing projects which have become the pride of the nation.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Selangor's success in becoming a developed state was not a myth or political rhetoric.

He said the success was a reality and proof of the capability of the Barisan Nasional government at the state level which had succeeded in planning and managing a multi-racial state in an integrated and pragmatic manner to the extent that Selangor had become a developed state.

Selangor will be declared a developed state Saturday.

Speaking at the opening of the Shah Alam International Exhibition here Friday, Najib said the Selangor and federal governments had developed close ties and complemented each other in the state's and country's development process.

Its strategic location and the spillover from the rapid development in the federal capital, Kuala Lumpur, had made Selangor as the most suitable location for federal development projects, he said.

For example, he said, the KL International Airport (KLIA), Port Klang, institutions of higher learning such as Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, International Islamic University (IIUM), Multimedia University, the headquarters of multinational companies and factories were all located in Selangor.

Selangor also contributed almost 22.5 percent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), he said.

Najib said the federal government appreciated the sacrifice made by the Selangor government particularly in handing over Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

"I don't think we (the federal government) will ask for more," the Deputy Prime Minister said in jest.

He also reminded the people of Selangor and the state government that the challenge in maintaining and raising the development level of the state was far greater than the planning made to achieve the state's development status.

The achievement of the developed state status gave an opportunity for the people to make various demands on the government administration.

"As a developed state, we are not only obliged to continue to fulfil the conditions and requirements of becoming a developed state, but even more critical is the need to fulfil the aspirations of the people," he said.

Najib said the government machinery must always be fair, competent, transparent and practise good governance as well as have a delivery system that was efficient, professional, people-friendly and truly committed.

He said that the developed status must be achieved using the state's own mould which also stressed on creating a community that upheld high moral values besides focusing on development.

In his speech, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said the state government was thankful to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib who had given their support and recognition to Selangor to be declared as a developed state Saturday.

He said the decision to declare Selangor as a developed state was actually made in 1992 by the state government with the agreement in principle of the federal government leadership at that time.

Dr Mohamad Khir said the success would not have been achieved without the continued support of the federal government.
