Sarawak Mulls Over Setting Up Its Own Management And Investment Entity

KUCHING, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- The debt-ridden Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) is studying to establish a separate entity to manage its senior squad and improve its financial standing.

FAS secretary-general Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said discussion on the mater had been fruit and the proposal could become a reality within this year.

"We may call it FAS Incorporated or establish a subsidiary, he told reporters after the signing of a contract to appoint Robert Albert as the new Sarawak coach, witnessed by state Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Datuk Seri William Mawan Ikom here today.

He said the difference between the now-scrapped Sarawak FC and the new entity was the structure of the organisation.

"Sarawak FC is totally a new football club while the new entity that we are proposing to set up is to manage the senior team and at the same time source for funding,"he said.

He said one of the main reasons the formation of the Sarawak FC id not materialise was the possibility that the new club could start playing in the lower rung football league such as the FAM Cup.

"We are playing in the Premier League now, It will be a long journey if we start from scratch again," he said.

For the coming new season, he said, the Sarawak senior squad, now relegated from the Super League to the Premier League, would be managed by a special committee while the FAS' day-to-day operation would be handled by the FAS exco members.

On the appointment of Albert, the former FAM director, as Sarawak coach for two years, he said his main task was to build a senior squad that could mount a serious challenge in the Premier League and gain promotion to the Super League within three years.

Asked whether the FAS had come up with a formula to settle its outstanding debt of RM3.5 million, he said that presently it had an auditing committee to assess and propose ways to improve FAS cash flow and at the same time hold discussions with the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and the players.
