23 Terengganu BN Reps Warns Of Boycott On MB Swearing In

KUALA TERENGGANU, March 22 (Bernama) -- All the 23 Terengganu Barisan Nasional (BN) State Assemblymen have issued a warning that they will boycott the swearing in ceremony for the post of Menteri Besar at Istana Tetamu, here Sunday morning if Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh is not reappointed as Menteri Besar.

Terengganu Umno Liaison secretary Datuk Rosol Wahid said all the elected representatives concerned except for Kijal State Assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Said would boycott the ceremony if Idris, who is also Terengganu Umno Liaison chairman was not announced as Menteri Besar.

In fact, some of the elected representatives concerned are willing to resign if someone else other than Idris was appointed Terengganu Menteri Besar.

"Today, all the Terengganu BN elected representatives except the Kijal Assemblyman held a meeting and we wish to stress that we unanimously support Datuk Seri Idris as Terengganu Menteri Besar. We won't support any other candidate.

"So any plan to name any candidate other than Datuk Seri Idris, we will not accept. We unanimously will boycott the (swearing in) ceremony if Datuk Seri Idris is not appointed as Menteri Besar," he said at a media conference at the Menteri Besar's official residence, Seri Iman, here. The meeting was held before the office of the Sultan of Terengganu issued a statement announcing the apppointment of Ahmad Said as the new Menteri Besar Saturday.

According to the statement issued by the Office of the Sultan of Terengganu, Ahmad, 51, would take his oath of office as the new Menteri Besar at Istana Tetamu, here Sunday morning.

Commenting further, Rosol, who is the Assemblyman for Ajil, also warned that all the State Assemblymen concerned would pass a vote of no-confidence at the State Assembly if Idris was not reappointed the Menteri Besar.

He said all the Assemblymen concerned had signed a letter stating their support for Idris and the letter would be forwarded to the Prime Minister and the Terengganu Regency Advisory Council (MPPR) Sunday.

When asked whether the move could be construed as an act of revolt, he said it was not so because Idris had received the leter of appointment as Terengganu Menteri Besar from the Prime Minister.

"We don't believe it is an act of revolt because we unanimously represent the people and respect the decision of the (Umno) president. We were elected as the people's representatives because we were appointed and given the mandate by the (Umno) president," he said.

He said all the elected representatives concerned decided to throw their support behind Idris as they felt no other leader besides Idris was capable of administering the state well.

"The decision that we made is not something that is forced, no payment is involved and we made the declaration to support him (Idris) with sincerity," he said.

Ahmad's appointment as the Terengganu Menteri Besar silenced all speculation that had been circulatng for the past 14 days because Terengganu, which remained under BN rule following the recent general election, is the only state that had yet to hold a swearing-in ceremony for the new Menteri Besar.

Idris retained his Jertih state seat for the second term in the March 8 polls where BN won 24 of the 32 state seats while PAS won the other eight state seats.
